Is This Blog Valuable to You? If so...

Every year, the delightful Rori -- sassy, submissive blogger at Between My Sheets -- takes on a monumental task. She asks people who enjoy reading sex-themed blogs to nominate their favorite sex bloggers. She gets hundreds of nominations.

Then Rori, sometimes aided by guest judges and sometimes not, reads every blog that has been nominated, and she selects and ranks the 100 best of the year.

I've had the honor of being nominated and judged worthy of being on this list all four of the past years: #21 in 2009; #10 (!) in 2010; #14 in 2011; and #30 in 2012. I feel particularly honored because this is the only senior sex blog on the list, and one of the few that is educational rather than erotic.

Now I'm doing my annual begging: If you find this blog valuable to you, would you please nominate "Joan Price's sex & aging blog:" on Rori's 2013 nominations page here?

Thank you!

Unabashed Request for Nomination: Best Sex Bloggers List 2012

Help put me on the 2012 list, too, please!

If you read and enjoy my blog, would you do me a big favor-- Nominate me for the 2012 Top Sex Bloggers list?

This annual list is determined by sex-savvy and blog-savvy Rori of Between My Sheets. Go here, and comment that you nominate Joan Price's sex and aging blog, (AKA http://betterthanieverex ), and say why. I've been on this list for three years in a row -- can we make it four?

Mine is the only blog specifically about sex and aging that's ever made the list, as far as I know, though there are several other delightful blogs that don't shy away from the topic.

Mine is also one of the few that offers sex education rather than erotic entertainment and titillation. Not that there's anything wrong with that -- it's just not what I do here, despite the efforts of a few men who send me requests for naked photos and/or send their own! (No, no, no, that is NOT a request.) Rori's own blog, you'll see, is starkly graphic (complete with moving parts), so be warned to click in private -- not at work or in front of the grandkids.

So if you enjoy reading the senior sex news, views and reviews you find here, and you want senior sex to have its place on the Top Sex Bloggers list, I hope you'll take a moment and nominate me. Feel free to copy your nomination comment below so my blog readers and I can enjoy it, if you like!

#14 of Top Sex Bloggers 2011!

I'm proud to be #14 of the Top 100 Sex Bloggers 2011, as judged by smart, sassy, sexy Rori, the sex blogger of Between My Sheets, after nominations by the huge sex blogger/sex reader community.

Everyone who blogs about sex hopes to be on this annual list, and I'm proud that this is the third year in a row that this blog has made the cut -- in fact it's been in the top 21 each time.

Of course I find the honor rewarding personally (woo hoo -- people read my blog and like it!), but even more, I am gratified that our topic is compelling enough to receive this high ranking among the many hundreds of sex blogs out there.

As far as I know -- and I still have to finish reading all the other award winners -- this is the only blog that focuses specifically on senior/elder sex, and one of the few in the top 100 that aims to be informative rather than erotic or titillating. Most of the award winners are in-your-face, down-and-dirty, sexually graphic in both writing and photos. That's cool, they're fun to read, and I'm not putting them down at all -- but my aim here is quite different.

I want this blog to be a resource for senior sex-themed information and viewpoints and a place to go when you want to read about senior sex. I want seniors and elders who grew up when I did to feel comfortable here. I see sexuality as a fascinating subject, even more at this age because it's so often kept under the covers. I want to normalize talking out loud about senior sex, and in a respectful, informative manner.

Not everyone likes my style. One year, a reader complained that my blog wasn't "actual sex" and my credibility as a sex blogger was in question because I didn't describe my own sex acts with partners, if indeed I had any. OK, move on, then.

I'm so happy that Rori and all of you who nominated this blog find it worthy of inclusion in the Top 100,and I thank all of you who read it. I love getting comments, so feel free to post (include your age, if you don't mind).

Enjoy the Top 100 -- but watch out, most of these blogs are not safe for reading at work (unless your work has a sex focus) or around the grandkids!

I'm not too proud to beg....

Dear readers, if you find the information in this blog worthwhile, even exemplary -- if you think this blog is among the best sexuality blogs -- please nominate it (and me) here for the Top 100 Sexiest Bloggers of 2011 award given by Rori at Between My Sheets and her sex-savvy panel of judges.

Last year this blog was ranked #10 of the top 100. It was the only one about senior sex, which made me especially proud.

Although I see that I've been nominated already, a few more nominations would let the judges see that we seniors, boomers, and elders value a blog about the sexual and sex-related issues that concern our age group specifically.

So, if you care to showcase our place in the sexuality blogosphere, please go here and tell them that Joan Price, blogger at (aka gets your nomination. You can nominate several blogs at the same time.

I'm not allowed to nominate my own blog -- but I am allowed to beg!

Thank you!

Our Blog Awards 2010

It's such a thrill to look at the awards this blog received in 2010. This blog was created in 2005 when Better Than I Ever Expected: Straight Talk about Sex After Sixty was about to come out. My aim was to let people know about my spicy memoir celebrating senior sex, and to keep the discussion going.

Over the next five years, this blog became the way I shared news, views, and reviews related to sex and aging. Whether you were looking for a review of a book, film, or sex toy from a senior perspective, or questions from other readers age 50-80+, or advice from experts, this blog became a resource for you.

It branched out into senior sex in the news, dating advice, and quirky items that caught my interest. When  Robert died, the blog expanded to include grief, because part of loving at our age is losing each other.

These are some of the awards this blog received in 2010. I hope you'll visit these sites that recognize the importance of talking out loud about senior sex:

Top 100 Sex Bloggers 2010 -- ranked #10! And the only blog on this list that is both educational (rather than erotic) and deals with senior sex. Read the whole list here.

Aging Healthy: Top 50 Aging and Gerontology Blogs -- the only sexuality blog on this list.

Seniors for Living: Top 100 Senior Blogs & Web Sites -- one of just six blogs dealing with senior sex and dating.

Pioneer Emergency: Top Senior Related Blogs -- the only sexuality blog on this list (find it under "Health and Fitness"). Pioneer is offering a special prize to one of our readers: three free months of  Pioneer's Medical Alarm System, which might be just the security that you or your loved one needs to summon medical attention with just the click of a pendant worn around the neck. I'll give this prize to the first reader who contacts me and tells me why this prize would be valuable to you.

This blog is also on many blog rolls and resource lists, and I thank all of you for supporting what we do here. I'm thrilled that this blog has been embraced as a resource by such diverse communities. I applaud you for your acceptance of this topic that we just starting talking out loud about five years ago. I welcome your comments. I hope you'll tell others what we're doing here.

As I approach publication of Naked at Our Age: Talking Out Loud about Senior Sex, I promise to keep the lively discussion going!

(Note that this blog can be accessed via and via the easier-to-remember It's the same blog.)

This blog is #10 of the Top 100!

Oh wow, not only is this blog on the Top 100 Sex Bloggers list again this year, it's #10! (It was #29 last year.)

#10 out of 200 nominees! Blogs were judged on site design, frequency of posting, quality of posts, readership interaction, and more. Excuse me while I do a little dance. As far as I know, I'm the only "elder blogger" on the list.

Most of the other winners are erotic blogs, rather than educational blogs as this one is. So I'm even more honored that an blog aimed at providing solid information about senior/elder sex was voted worthy of being in the top 10 of all sex blogs!

For new visitors to my blog: I am the author of Better Than I Ever Expected: Straight Talk About Sex After Sixty and the upcoming Naked at Our Age: Talking Out Loud about Senior Sex. I started this blog after Better Than I Ever Expected was published in 2006 because I wanted to connect with my readers and continue the discussion about sex and aging.

This blog is all about senior/elder sexuality and related topics, including tips for improving sex at our age, reviews of sex toys from a senior perspective, books and films that look at senior sex, expert interviews, senior sex in the news, dating, and my personal love story. Because sex/love at our age does often involve loss, you'll find posts about grief as well.

Read this blog via either and the easier to remember I hope you'll visit often. I love comments, so please share your thoughts.

See all the Best Sex Bloggers 2010 winners here. (Warning: extremely explicit content on most of these blogs. If that's enticing, I hope you'll explore many of the top 100.)

I'm so jazzed about being #10! Many thanks to Rori and her BetweenMySheets blog, and all the judges.

Is this blog one of the top 100 sex blogs?

Unabashed request for you to nominate this blog, Better Than I Ever Expected: Sex and Aging, for "Top 100 Sex Bloggers 2010."

In 2009, this blog won the ranking of #21-- I was truly surprised, because I didn't even know it had been nominated! It was the only blog dealing with senior sex, and as far as I know, I was the oldest blogger on the list. It was one of the few educational blogs honored -- most were erotic blogs.

Right now, nominations are open for 2010, and I'm openly soliciting your nomination. If you're willing, go to and nominate

It's the same blog you know as, and both URLS will continue to work. In honor of my new, upcoming book, Naked at Our Age: Talking Out Loud about Senior Sex, I'm shifting focus with the new URL--plus it’s easier to remember.

So if you think the content here is worthwhile, and you'd like more people to know it exists, please add your nomination of at

With much gratitude,

Aging Healthy Names Top 50 Aging and Gerontology Blogs

I'm honored! This blog, Better Than I Ever Expected: Sex and Aging, has been chosen by Aging Healthy as one of  the "Top 50 Aging and Gerontology Blogs" -- and it's the only blog about sexuality on the list! Aging Healthy offers "resources and tidbits on the social and medical aspects of aging." I'm delighted that ageless sexuality has a place of importance there now.

Welcome to the readers of Aging Healthy who are now visiting this blog for the first time. Please see the "labels" list at the right with links to topics I've covered in the past. There's a lot here!

I hope that all of you who study gerontology and related topics will join me in recognizing how important healthy sexuality is throughout our lives, not just when we're young. Keeping and nurturing our sex lives can help shape our quality of life in later years.

Thank you, Healthy Aging!

Senior Sex Blog is Educational, not Erotic

Scott said...

Joan, I think that a space that addresses senior sex is great. However, what I see are a number of posts that talk about sex toys and online dating sites and some blogs, but not, you know, actual sex. And I understand your loss, but also get the impression that you are not actually having sex, at least not with another person. Maybe I'm wrong and I didn't go back far enough in your blog, but I think it begs the question of how much credibility you have in the area.

When I got this comment from reader Scott on my post about my Top Sex Bloggers award, I laughed and gave him a light-hearted response. Some of my readers urged me to answer him with more explanation of what I'm doing and why.

not, you know, actual sex

"Actual sex"? First, I'd like to get us away from the idea that "actual sex" means intercourse. "Actual sex," in my view, especially as I write for and learn from other seniors and elders, means sexual expression in whatever form that takes. For example:

Many of my readers are single now, through widowhood, divorce, break-up, or choice, and are having sex solo. One of my missions is to help these readers understand how sex toys can enhance this experience and may even mean the difference between achieving that elusive orgasm or not. Hence all the sex toy reviews.

Many of my readers are dating or ready to date and know that options have changed and the "rules" upturned since they last dated, which might have been 40 years ago! I want to encourage, educate, and, I hope, entertain readers about DWO: Dating While Old(er).

Many of my readers are coupled, but their sex lives have been altered by age, illness, medications, and myriad emotions that interfere with sexual experience and/or satisfaction. I want to offer resources to enourage readers to express their sexuality and keep their intimacy strong, even when life throws out obstacles.

Many of my readers are still having great sex at age 60, 70, 80+, and I want to share their stories -- and advice -- here and in my books.

I use this blog for all of the above, plus answering reader questions, reviewing books, and showcasing experts in the growing field of sex and aging.

To answer Scott's last concern directly, no, I am not having sex with another person at this time of my life. Okay, it's out there.

However, even when my beloved Robert was alive and vital and we were having amazing sex, my blog wasn't about recounting our sexual intimacies for the voyeuristic enjoyment of my readers. Plenty of other blogs do that -- many of them are on the top 100 list with me. My blog is educational, not erotic. I consider myself an advocate for ageless sexuality and a sex educator in that new arena. Credibility? I've got it.

I hope this answers Scott and others who might have those questions, also. Readers, I hope you'll comment!

Top 100 Sex Bloggers of 2009

I just discovered that I've been chosen one of the top 100 sex bloggers by Between My Sheets and 13 other judges! I'm ranked number 21, pretty amazing when just a few years ago, nobody talked about senior/elder sex! See all 100 here, and be sure to visit the sites of the judges, too.

I'm about to turn 66 (tomorrow), and I'll bet I'm the oldest sex blogger on the list, as well as, perhaps, the only one who uses her/his real name!

It's funny, in a way, how these things work out. During my first year after Robert's death, a time of extreme grieving, I couldn't focus well enough to work on anything that demanded more than an hour of concentration at a time.

I was still interested in helping the readers who wrote me with questions (we help ourselves by helping others, I firmly believe), so my blog was the perfect outlet. It gained momentum as you, its readers, recognized its value. I put more time and energy into my blog in 2009 than its first four years combined. I consider my #21 ranking among the Top 100 Sex Bloggers an honor!

Thank you, Between My Sheets, judges, and readers!
